Does Pet Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

No, pre-existing conditions aren't covered. If an illness, injury, or health condition was known before your policy started, treatment for it won't be covered.

What Counts as a Pre-existing Condition

A pre-existing condition includes any condition or injury your vet provided medical advice for, your pet received treatment for, or displayed signs or symptoms of, before your Policy Effective Date or during any waiting period.

How We Determine a Pre-existing Condition

For Odie policies: During the initial vet records assessment and any claim processing, we look at the 18 months preceding your Policy Effective Date; any conditions present during that period are excluded. Conditions present during your policy's waiting periods are also considered pre-existing.

The following conditions are considered pre-existing if present at any time before your Policy Effective Date or the expiration of any waiting period:

  • Chronic conditions
  • Bilateral conditions, if your pet had a pre-existing condition consistent with that same bilateral condition on either side of the body
  • Intervertebral disc conditions, if your pet had a pre-existing condition involving the intervertebral discs (from degeneration or trauma)

For Rainwalk policies: Pre-existing condition means any condition for which any of the following are true prior to the effective date of a pet insurance policy or during any waiting period:

  • Any condition with prior medical advice, treatment, or signs/symptoms before the effective date or waiting period of a pet insurance policy.

For Kanguro policies: A pre-existing condition is any injury, illness, or irregularity noticed by you or your veterinarian before the end of your waiting period, even if your pet never went to see the veterinarian for it. Such as

  • Chronic Conditions
  • Cruciate Ligament problems
  • Bilateral Conditions,
  • Intervertebral Conditions.
